Street Smarts Marin

STREET SMARTS MARIN is a traffic calming program supported by the Transportation Authority of Marin (TAM) and local jurisdictions in Marin County. Its purpose is to make Marin’s streets safer and friendlier.

STREET SMARTS:
  • Addresses traffic problems at their source – in the minds of drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists.
  • Brings education to the equation by supplementing traffic safety efforts involving engineering and enforcement.
  • Works on many levels through outdoor advertising and the press, community events, school activities and discussions, neighborhood initiatives, corporate sponsorships and more.

Pilot Program Marin

Corte Madera, Larkspur and Mill Valley pilot-tested the STREET SMARTS MARIN program from August 28th to November 1st, 2008. The pilot program deployed to coincide with the start of school and was on display through Halloween. The pilot communities then re-deployed the banners in three strategic corridors in June 2009 to target unsafe behaviors around schools, parks and other locales that are busy with camps and other summer activities.

The Educational Campaign Employs:
Outdoor Media Banners, signs and posters deployed at the "hotspots" where the targeted traffic behaviors occur most frequently.
Community Outreach Programs Programs are accompanied by safety brochures and posters displayed in classrooms, businesses and organizations.

Program Expansion Phase II August 2009

The pilot program was well received by the three communities and other Marin residents. Feedback collected from comments submitted on the website, surveys, citizen comments and city/town staff was overwhelmingly positive. The Transportation Authority of Marin voted to extend the program. Phase II includes the original pilot communities and Tiburon, Belvedere, Ross, San Anselmo and Fairfax. San Rafael and Novato may participate in Phase III assuming local jurisdictional interest and program funds permit.

Feedback received about the format of some of the messages was incorporated into design updates and some new messages were added. Other lessons learned in the pilot shaped the Phase II expansion in 2009 scheduled for back-to-school the week of August 24th. to run through October 10th.

The STREET SMARTS MARIN expanded program includes a Community Traffic Safety Program Did You Know Campaign Icon
called "Get Street Smart!  Did You Know?" which is available for community representatives,
businesses, homeowners associations and other organizations to present. This presentation is designed to raise awareness, change attitudes and improve driving, pedestrian and bicycling behaviors. To view or download a copy of "Get Street Smart!  Did You Know?"  Click here.
