past, the county accommodated growing transportation demands by widening and constructing roads. However, this approach is costly, has an impact on the environment and our quality of life, and can no longer keep up with the increasing use of our roadways and transit systems. To decrease congestion, we need choices, called elements in the Vision document, that enable people to travel differently and conveniently. The specific elements will ultimately be included in a single master plan to be implemented based on identified priorities and available funding.
Trips within Marin County
Reinvent Our Local Bus Transit ServiceFeatures may include two new transit junctions and improvements to the transit hub in San Rafael designed to provide convenient transfer points, allowing passengers to seamlessly travel from their local residence to any point within the county.
Additional passenger benefits include automated Next Bus information and a new County Express Bus route, serving residential and employment areas along Highway 101. Local shuttles, friendly to seniors and youth riders who currently have few options, will offer short local trips.
Paratransit will offer specialized services for seniors and persons with disabilities.
The Marin Bus Transit Futures document reports that transit ridership could increase daily by 21,800 riders by 2020 if the plan is implemented (from 13,200 currently to 35,000 in 2020).
A Major School ProgramSchool bus services to schools will be provided throughout the county. Safe Routes to School promotes safe biking and walking programs for children and has already reduced driving trips to participating schools by approximately 15%. Programs will be enhanced with a School pool program providing new ride matching.
Bicycle and Pedestrian PathwaysThe vision plan includes bicycle and pedestrian links to the major projects in the plan, making it possible to access transit modes without a car. The North-South and East-West bicycle projects will attract bicycle and pedestrian commuters and those connecting to transit services and could more than double bicycle use during commute hours.
Local Streets and Roads and Interchange ProjectsThe vision plan addresses a number of crucial bottleneck areas along Highway 101 including Atherton Avenue, Lucas Valley Road, I-580, Greenbrae Interchange, Tamalpais Drive, Tiburon Boulevard, and Alexander Avenue.
In addition, the vision plan places a major emphasis on maintaining our local streets, roads, and sidewalks.
Highway 101 continues to be the backbone of travel in the urbanized areas of the North Bay. Thus, a great deal of attention was given to its greatest congestion areas, not just on the highway but also in those areas that impact local trips. The vision plan proposes the following solutions:
Transit Centers will be Intermodal HubsConvenient local and express buses, as well as business shuttles and other transit modes (including at least one major ferry line, taxis, bike and pedestrian routes, and trains) will link through county transit centers.
Bicycle and pedestrian access linking to the proposed East-West Bikeway and North-South Bikeway (described previously) will also be part of the station plans.
New Commuter TrainThe Sonoma Marin Area Rail Transit (SMART) rail system is a fast, efficient commuter train service proposed from Cloverdale to San Rafael with a second phase connection to a ferry terminal will provide service within the county, as well as travel between Sonoma, Marin and San Francisco counties. Service will be provided every 30 minutes during peak periods, carrying an estimated 5,100 riders per day.During the peak morning commute, the SMART train service would reduce travel on southbound Highway 101 by 1,900 car trips per day.
Increased Express Bus ServiceA refined countywide express bus system providing direct links between higher density residential areas and employment sites without requiring a transfer will complement, not compete with, the train. Expanded County Express Bus services will carry an estimated 1,350 additional riders each day.
Completion of the HOV (Carpool and Bus) Lanes on Highway 101Adding a high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lane in the Marin-Sonoma Narrows will provide a continuous vehicle express lane between the counties and eliminate many hours of delay.
Increased Ferry ServiceThe Water Transit Authority is currently studying additional locations for a new North Bay Ferry terminal expected to provide a critical link between the proposed train and ferry service and help connect regional trips.
