Highway 101 HOV Gap Closure Project
The Highway 101 HOV Gap Closure Project provides continuous carpool lanes in both directions from Lucky Drive in Corte Madera to the south of North San Pedro Road in San Rafael.
The HOV Gap Closure project completion ceremony was held on March 11, 2011. Completion of this project closed a 4.5 mile gap in the HOV lane system in Marin County from Richardson Bay Bridge to Route 37, providing 17 miles of continuous carpool lane in both the northbound and southbound direction. The completion of this project provides a substantial reduction in the delay during commute hours. The southbound morning commute delay in the carpool lane reduced by 77% (from 22 minutes to 5 minutes) and 72% in other lanes (from 29 minutes to 9 minutes). The northbound afternoon commute delay in the carpool lane reduced by 73% (from 5.5 minutes to 1.5 minutes) and 50% in the other lanes (from 12 minutes to 6 minutes). The congested time period was reduced from 4.5 hours to 2 hours in the southbound morning commute and from 4 hours to 2.5 hours in the afternoon commute time.
Some of the features included in the construction of this project are as follows:
